To be a friend to Char meant hanging out over a cup of jo (or a mocha, latte, etc.). Char found new community in San Diego at Starbucks, sitting outside as per usual to enjoy a cigarette.

if he knew the Mission
was no longer the city's crowning glory
outdone now by the Jack Murphy Sports Arena
Where post modern conquistidors
having no other cultures to decimate
must be paid huge sums to subjugate one another
