THE AVE

Char had a love/hate relationship with the Ave. At the very least, it was a community she observed.

Char on the Ave
Char on the Ave.

A DAY ON THE AVE:
THE ALCHEMY OF FAILURE

You see them everywhere now
revealed, an open Demsey dumpster full
with the days leavings
of faces and fists closed
sullen, inedible
and bodies sagging like empty sacks.
Some with their heads tipped
to the sky, muttering, cursing
why, why me, why

The human condition
is a manichean waltz
saints need sinners
sages need fools
and winers, oh my, need ... youknow

The hip hoppers come dancing up
mouths and bodies speaking a language
the "good" person translates
using the alphabet of threat
oh dear, or dear and a fundie appears
Excuse me, do you have a few moments
I'd like to speak to you about the lord
and twentycenturies of human misery
subjugation, torture and death

Two young girls walk by
teenage breats impossibly high
hips grinding that ageless rhythm
And the boys in front of Videoland
mouths interrupted in mid-Dude
roll their avid eyes
greedy sweat clenched
in their grimy palms
their view suddenly eclipsed
by an enormous fat man
blocked in his upstream navagational challenge
by a stationary bicycle rack

Jeezus, they yell, move your fat butt!
While an old woman with a blue rinse
Expresses her disapproval with a yank

I'VE GOT MINE

I've got mine
too bad about you
I know you're hungry
But what can I do
I've got enough food for me and mine
I can't give you any 'cause it's god's design
You should go hungry while I dine
Too bad about you
I've got mine

I've got mine
too bad about you
I know you're thirsty
but what can I do
I have water but none to spare
I might go thirsty if I tried to share
Take care of myself is my number one rule
I've got mine
too bad about you.

I've got mine
too bad about you
I see your pain
but what can I do
My own life is not all milk and honey
I work very hard to earn my money
So unless you're fully prepared to pay
Take your pain and just go away
My time is valuable, not for free
Too bad about you
hurray for me

I got mine
too bad about you
I see you're bleeding
but what can I do
I'm keynoting the conference tonight
As you can see I'm dressed in white
I can't get blood on my new clothes
They're silk you know everything shows
So I can't stop to help you pull through
I've got mine
too bad about you

I've got mine
too bad about you
I see you're dead
but what could I do
I couldn't let you break my stride
After all I have my pride
Besides it's part of God's design
That many seek bot so few find
So the goodies go to the chosen few
I've got mine
too bad about you
