In Kim, Char found a partner and caretaker who saw her through some of the most difficult times in her life.

I hear the frogs this spring night
this night, rich with promise
alive with intensity
voices of frog, cricket, airplane, automobile
down the street a child cries out
closer in a younger girl sings her way home
in the house the radio murmers
in a back bedroom
and I hear your muted response
to the telephone
I hear your laugh
but not what makes you laugh
so much is happening
yet it is so calm, so easy
all the voices have enough space
to be independent, flowing, free
Perhaps it is the darkness that allows
such freedom
or perhaps it's me.
