Marvin Rand, Associate of Architects & Builders

Marvin will always be with us in
spirit. He was such an important
part of our lives. We will miss him
dearly. We want you to know that
you are also a part of our lives
and you can always call on us
whenever, for anything
(especially lunch at Hal's…!)

… Marvin was truly one of the few
masters that I have had the pleasure
to work and play with.

He definitely left a huge impression
on me. Because of him I learned to see
and judge the world with a keener eye
and a sharper mind. I feel blessed to
have known him and I am so thankful
that he has photographed many of the
projects that I have built.

Most of all Marvin helped build my
confidence and encourage me to
pursue construction when I was
just getting seriously started in
construction. He always told me that
of all the builders he knew I was
amongst the few that “got it!” When
he told me these things of course I felt
flattered but it also gave me the
drive to try harder and build better.
It was really through Marvin's eyes
and experience that I discovered that
I needed to up the ante if I wanted
to stand out as a builder.

And then there was the fun.
Even though we were decades apart in
age, our mindsets were both youthful
and playful...

He has left many friends, colleagues
and admirers – and lives forever.
Marvin has achieved a legacy of
extraordinary architectural work
with much deserved recognition.

I worked briefly in architectural
photography but never at the
exemplary artistry of Marvin Rand!
He never retired – but worked with
passion tirelessly at the highest level.
At Art Center and in the profession,
he contributed to the altitude of art
in our profession.

Marvin loved architects and
architects loved Marvin.

His perceptive photographic images of
unique architectural works are legend
in themselves, works of art to be admired
forever. His photographs record the very
early Green and Green and Irving Gill;
the mid-century case study architects
such as Craig Ellwood. We are most
fortunate that Marvin Rand used his
enormous visual talent to capture the
essence of American architecture for
nearly six decades.

…Marvin photographed my
City Planning Toy which was
published in Progressive Architecture Magazine . He
also photographed the first
house I did in Laguna Beach.
Both are some of my best
presentation slides and have
been very useful for me since.
